Capital of Mesia until 1912. Here lived Prospero Marini, an Italian Knight and exclusive salt merchant of all the Eptani Islands, until his death in 1694. Based on his will, a Higher Spiritual Institution was built and operated around the site of the church of Panagia Chrysopigi ( today's Zoodochos Pigi) for the children of all Corfu to study there. The institution was fenced and operated by 10 monks. Marini's grave according to his will is behind the church. Near the village square there is the (once private) church of St. Spyridon dating from 1730. Icons from both churches are in the Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa.
