Corfu is particularly important for birdlife with around 300 species recorded so far on the island, some of which are threatened with extinction and protected by international conventions. The location on the major migration corridor, large lagoons, semi-rural areas and densely vegetated spots make the island a top choice for bird watching.
The lagoons are home to various species of ducks, such as northern pintails, garganies, northern shovelers, Eurasian wigeons, common pochards, ferruginous ducks, common shelducks and mallards.
Other aquatic species are the greater flamingo, collared pratincole, black-winged stilt, kingfisher, ruddy turnstone, oystercatcher, stone-curlew, pied avocet, glossy ibis, fighter and various species of herons and calidris.
The presence of many species of gulls and terns is important, such as the Little gull, the Audouin's gull, the Mediterranean gull, the white-winged tern, the black tern, the whiskered tern, the gull-billed tern, the common tern, the sandwich tern and the Caspian tern, as well as the occasional presence of the resident gannet. mainly in the Atlantic seas.
All the species of ash and swallows that appear in Greece are deceived here.

It should be emphasized that the number of the endangered great egret is particularly high in the Halikiopoulos lagoon (over 94 individuals in one day).
In the mountainous areas, various birds of prey (falcon-headed) often appear, which move from the opposite Albanian coasts following the migratory birds.
Among the raptors, one can find ospreys, short-toed snake eagles, European honey buzzards, Montagu's harriers, Hen harriers, Western marsh harriers, buzzards, peregrine falcons, Eurasian sparrowhawks, red-footed falcon, kestrels and Eurasian hobbies.
Among the nocturnal predators here live tytos, owls and Eurasian scops owls.
Some of the rocky islands that surround Corfu are nesting places for birds (e.g. the island of Peristera or Caparelli is a nesting place for Wild Pigeons and Gulls)
