Smilax aspera
Chaste tree
Agrielia is a long-lived shrub, essentially immortal. It has many crooked branches that, when they dry out, produce sprouts from the underground part of the stem and the tree continues its life. Its leaves are small, opposite, short-stemmed, oval, with a dark green color above and silver-white below. The silver color on the underside of the olive leaf is due to the large number of multicellular scale-like hairs present on the lower epidermis. Its fruits are small black drupes that produce an excellent quality oil. It is the famous wild oil, which is used in folk medicine as a medicine, for skin and other diseases.
The history of the Olive is as old as the history of organized human societies. There are countless written sources, traditions, myths, excavation evidence, etc. which prove the relationship of the Olive Tree with the history of man on Earth. The ancient Greeks considered the olive a symbol of glory and victory, for this reason they crowned the Olympians with a wreath (kotino) made of wild olive, which they called callistefano.
