Cephalanthera rubra
Himantoglossum jankae
The Roman dactylorhiza is the only one that grows at low altitudes in southern Greece and the islands. It has lanceolate leaves clustered in rosettes at the base of the plant. The flowers can be purple, off-white or white and have a long, upward-pointing spike, a feature that distinguishes it from the similar D. sambucina. It is found in forest clearings, olive groves, scrublands and scrublands.
It was scientifically described in 1813 from the area of Rome with the original name Orchis romana.
